PT Santomo Green Power Management (Head office: Jakarta; President Director: Shuntaro Yamaguchi; hereinafter “SGPM”), a subsidiary of Santomo Resources Corporation (Head office: Tokyo; President: Tomoichi Yamaguchi; hereinafter “Santomo”), has been supplying “Smoot” brand electric motorcycles manufactured by PT Smoot Motor Indonesia (Head office: Jakarta; President Director: Kevin Phang; hereinafter “Smoot”), and installing and operating Battery Swapping Stations for these electric motorcycles, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Republic of Indonesia, since November 2022.
In the future, a large number of used batteries are expected to be generated in the world, and efforts to reuse and recycle batteries have begun. The same issue of used batteries is expected to arise with electric motorcycle batteries as well, so we have launched a demonstration project to promote the reuse (secondary use) of used batteries in order to extend their lifetime cycle and reduce their negative impact on the environment.
In this demonstration, used electric motorcycle batteries and dedicated power supply equipment were used to enable the use of electrical appliances without using power from the grid. Going forward, we plan to verify the convenience, having electric appliances used at the remote locations such as events and in general households with low contracted power (many general households in Indonesia use grid power with 450VA/900VA contracted power).
In the future, we are also considering the possibility of supporting products that contribute to the electrification of cooking, such as rice cookers, in addition to low-power-consumption appliances such as televisions. Through clean cooking (electrification of cooking), we will work to reduce the use of wood and charcoal for cooking and achieve SDG Goal 7, “AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY.”
<Details of the Demonstration Project>
In this demonstration project, power is supplied directly from a used battery to a TV set.

*The image above shows a case of a TV set powered by a used battery in our showroom. In the demonstration project, we plan to have ordinary households use the system to verify convenience and other aspects.
This demonstration effort is one of a series of initiatives in our February 6, 2024 news release, “Sustainability initiatives.” We will continue to support our clients’ transition strategies toward carbon neutrality through the renewable energy-related businesses we are developing, and take on the challenge of solving climate change issues in Asia and the rest of the world, thereby contributing to the realization of a sustainable society and economic growth.
