PT Santomo Green Power Management (Head office: Jakarta; President Director: Shuntaro Yamaguchi; hereinafter “SGPM”), a subsidiary of Santomo Resources Corporation (Head office: Tokyo; President: Tomoichi Yamaguchi; hereinafter “Santomo”), has been supplying “Smoot” brand electric motorcycles manufactured by PT Smoot Motor Indonesia (Head office: Jakarta, President Director: Kevin Phang, hereinafter “Smoot”) and installing and operating battery-swapping stations (hereinafter “BSS”) for these motorcycles in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, since November 2022.
Currently, over 60% of electric motorcycle charging in Indonesia relies on coal-fired power plants, limiting the effectiveness of transitioning to electric motorcycles in reducing CO2 emissions. To further reduce emissions, SGPM has launched a demonstration project utilizing solar power for charging BSS.
Through this initiative, SGPM aims to both lower environmental impacts by using solar energy and evaluate the potential for generating and trading carbon credits via the IDX Carbon Exchange (Indonesia Stock Exchange).
Looking ahead, SGPM plans to introduce lightweight, thin next-generation solar cells, such as perovskite solar panels. These advanced solar technologies are ideal for facilities with limited roof load capacities, such as convenience stores and gas stations, enabling the broader adoption of solar energy in such locations.
<Demonstration Details>
In this project, BSS were directly charged by solar power systems in an off-grid configuration, without connecting to the main power grid.

*In this project, the demonstration utilized SGPM’s showroom as a testing site with an off-grid setup. However, discussions are underway to enable future grid integration with Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, PLN.
This demonstration effort is one of a series of initiatives in our February 6, 2024 news release, “Sustainability initiatives.” We will continue to support our clients’ transition strategies toward carbon neutrality through the renewable energy-related businesses we are developing, and take on the challenge of solving climate change issues in Asia and the rest of the world, thereby contributing to the realization of a sustainable society and economic growth.
